Short answer: it depends less on the headline percentage than on what each platform charges it on. So we ran the same sale through all six at five prices and looked at what you’d actually take home.
The same sale, six platforms
Every row is one sale with $8 shipping paid by the buyer and 7.5% sales tax. We used each platform’s standard US fees: eBay’s most-categories rate, Whatnot Fashion at the Standard tier, Etsy with its $0.20 listing fee, and no Depop boost.

In this comparison, Depop charged the least at every price in the table, and the most expensive was eBay at $10.00 and $25.00, then Poshmark from $50.00 up. Second-cheapest: Whatnot at $10.00, then Mercari at $25.00, $50.00 and $100.00, then Etsy at $250.00.

What each platform charges on
- eBay: 13.6% of the whole sale (item, the shipping you charge and sales tax) in most categories, plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order (eBay Help, checked ).
- Poshmark: $2.95 under $15, 20% from $15. The buyer pays Poshmark for the label, so shipping isn’t part of your fee or your payout (Poshmark guide, checked ).
- Mercari: 10% of the item price plus the shipping the buyer pays, with no separate seller processing fee (Mercari Help, checked ).
- Whatnot: Commission on the item price only (8% in Fashion at the Standard tier, lower at higher sales tiers), plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing on everything the buyer pays (Whatnot Help, checked ).
- Depop: No selling fee for US sellers, just 3.3% + $0.45 payment processing on the item, shipping and tax, and 12% of the item price (plus shipping if you don’t use a Depop label) if you boost a listing (Depop Help Centre, checked ).
- Etsy: $0.20 to list, 6.5% of the item and shipping (Etsy Help, checked ), and 3% + $0.25 processing on the total including tax (Etsy Help, checked ).
Lowest fees isn’t the whole answer
- Buyers pay fees too on some sites. Mercari buyers pay a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on the item and shipping (Mercari Help, checked ). Depop also has a buyer-side Marketplace fee, linked from its fee page. Those don’t come out of your payout, but they do change what the buyer pays.
- Etsy isn’t for everything. Etsy only allows items you made or designed, vintage items at least 20 years old, and craft supplies (Etsy Help: What can I sell?, checked ).
- Poshmark’s buyer pays shipping. Its fee looks high, but you never buy a label for parcels up to 5 lb, which is why its take-home gap is smaller than its fee gap.
- Where buyers shop matters more than a few points of fee. A lower fee doesn’t help if the item sits unsold. The where to sell helper weighs category fit alongside the money.
