Not sure what shipping costs? Estimate shipping

Field help Sale price: the item price the buyer pays, before shipping and tax. Buyer shipping: Poshmark ignores this: the buyer pays Poshmark for the label. Sales tax: collected and remitted by the marketplace, but some platforms charge fees on it. Applied to item + shipping. Your shipping label cost (under More options): leave it blank to assume it equals the shipping you charged. Items sold per month (under More options): how many sales like this you make in a month, from 1 to 10,000. Above 1, you also get monthly and yearly totals. You paid for it: what the item cost you, so "you keep" is your real profit.

Poshmark takes a flat $2.95 on sales under $15 and 20% of the sale price from $15 up, and the buyer pays for the shipping label (Poshmark: Guide to Poshmark (fees)). Mercari takes a 10% selling fee on the item price plus the shipping your buyer pays, with no separate payment processing fee (Mercari Help: Fees on Mercari).

The short answer

  • Buyer pays shipping on both: Mercari leaves you more at every price. On a $40 sale with $8 buyer shipping you keep $25.20 on Mercari and $22.00 on Poshmark. Even under $15, Mercari’s 10% is smaller than Poshmark’s flat $2.95 (at $10 you keep -$1.80 vs -$2.95).
  • You offer free shipping on Mercari ($8 label): the label comes out of your payout on Mercari, while Poshmark’s buyer still pays for theirs. Then Poshmark leaves you more up to $79.92, and Mercari wins from $79.93 up. At $40 that’s $22.00 on Poshmark vs $18.00 on Mercari.
  • Every figure assumes $8 shipping, 7.5% sales tax and a $10 item cost. Change any number in the calculator above to see your own result.

Why Mercari usually wins on fees

Mercari’s 10% is half of Poshmark’s 20%. Mercari does charge it on buyer-paid shipping too, but on an $8 label that’s only $0.80, so it never closes the gap once Poshmark’s 20% kicks in at $15. Below $15, Poshmark’s flat $2.95 is still more than 10% of the item plus shipping. Shipping is the swing factor: if you pay for the label on Mercari, Poshmark comes out ahead on everyday prices.

Other fees to know

  • Mercari payouts: a direct deposit to your bank is free; Instant Pay costs $3 per cash-out, and a failed direct deposit costs $2 (Mercari Help: Fees on Mercari).
  • What Mercari buyers pay: a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on the item price plus shipping. It comes from the buyer, not from your payout (Mercari Help: Fees on Mercari).
  • Poshmark’s $15 line: accepting an offer that drops a sale below $15 switches the fee from 20% to a flat $2.95. The offer & bundle calculator shows what you keep on any offer.

How the math works, what we assume, and where both fee rules come from.

How we calculate

We take your sale price, the shipping you charge and the buyer's sales tax, apply Poshmark's and Mercari's published US fee rules (linked under Sources), then subtract your shipping label and what you paid for the item. Each fee is rounded to the cent. It is an estimate: your platform statement is the final word.

Sell the same kind of item often? Set Items sold per month under More options to see monthly and yearly totals. We work out one sale to the cent and multiply it, so the totals assume every sale pays the same fees (plus eBay's insertion fee past 250 free listings a month).

The break-even prices on this page come from running the same calculator at every price, one cent at a time, and finding where the result flips.

What we assume

US seller, US buyer, US dollars, one item per order, standard account in good standing, no promotions, ads, refunds, currency conversion or instant-payout fees. Sales tax is collected and remitted by the marketplace, so it is never part of your payout, but eBay, Whatnot (processing), Depop and Etsy (processing) still charge a percentage on it. "Payout" is what the platform sends you; "profit" also subtracts your label and item cost. Each fee line is rounded to the cent.
