Ranking…

See the details

Every number behind the ranking, and the public pages each fact comes from.

How we rank

No secret formula: here is every number we use. Each platform gets a score out of 10 from three or four parts, weighted by what you said matters most.

1. Money (from the fee math)

We run your sale through the same fee rules as our calculators (fees.js and the monthly totals). The platform that leaves you the most per year scores 10; every 4% less you'd keep costs 1 point, down to 0. "Buyer pays" means you charge the shipping cost and spend it on the label; "free shipping" means you charge $0 and still pay for the label. We use each platform's standard US fees: eBay's matching category rate (no insertion fee, no store), Whatnot's standard tier and matching category, no Depop Boost, and Etsy's $0.20 listing fee. Poshmark's buyer always pays Poshmark for the label in our math, so shipping discounts you offer there aren't included.

2. Category fit (from each platform's own pages)

  • Great fit (10 points): The platform has its own category for this kind of item, and its own pages either describe it as a main focus or offer a program built for it (such as authentication or a category fee rate).
  • Good fit (7 points): The platform lists this kind of item as one of its own shopping categories.
  • Possible (3 points): The platform allows it, but only under a broad or catch-all category, or its own pages don't list it. These are the rows where public information is thin.
  • Not a fit (0 points): The platform's own rules don't allow it.

Platforms that are only a Possible fit are always listed after Great and Good fits, whatever the money: a few dollars more isn't worth listing where buyers don't shop for your item. Not a fit platforms aren't ranked at all.

Etsy's rules: Etsy only allows items you made or designed, vintage items at least 20 years old, and craft supplies. Reselling mass-produced items isn't allowed, and newer or vintage-style items can't be listed as vintage (Etsy Help: What Can I Sell on Etsy?). So Etsy is a Great fit only for handmade and crafts, Possible for vintage (if it's really 20+ years old), and not a fit for everything else.

3. Your priority

How each part is weighted

Most money70%30%--
Sell fastest25%60%15%-
Least effort25%35%-40%

Sell fastest is not a speed prediction. We have no reliable public data on how fast items sell on each platform, and we don't make it up. Instead it leans harder on category fit (platforms where buyers already shop for your kind of item) and gives some points for live selling, where items sell during a show while buyers watch. eBay's own seller page says Buy It Now is usually the best format if you want to sell quickly (eBay: Selling on eBay).

Least effort gives points for how shipping works, from each platform's own seller page. Live-selling and effort points out of 10:

  • eBay: live selling 5, effort 5. eBay also runs live selling (eBay Live), where items sell during a stream. (eBay Live) You buy a discounted label inside eBay; eBay suggests a carrier but you pick the service and the box. (eBay: Selling on eBay)
  • Poshmark: live selling 5, effort 8. Poshmark also has live shopping (Posh Live) next to regular listings. (Poshmark: About Poshmark) Poshmark sends a prepaid, pre-addressed label: print it, pack it, take it to USPS. (Poshmark: Sell on Poshmark)
  • Mercari: live selling 0, effort 5. Mercari gives you printable, discounted shipping labels in the app. (Mercari: The Selling App) No live selling found on its seller pages.
  • Whatnot: live selling 10, effort 3. Whatnot is built around live shows and auctions, so items sell while buyers watch. (Whatnot: Selling on Whatnot) Whatnot is built for hosting live shows from your phone; you print labels, pack and drop off orders yourself. (Whatnot: Selling on Whatnot)
  • Depop: live selling 0, effort 10. With Depop Shipping the buyer prepays the label and you just show a QR code at drop-off; no printer needed. (Depop: Sell on Depop) No live selling found on its seller pages.
  • Etsy: live selling 0, effort 5. You buy and print your label inside Etsy's Shop Manager. (Etsy Help: How to Purchase Shipping Labels on Etsy) No live selling found on its seller pages.

Ties go to the platform that leaves you more money, then to a fixed order (eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, Whatnot, Depop, Etsy). The same inputs always give the same ranking.

What we assume

US seller, US buyer, US dollars, one item per order, standard account in good standing, no promotions, ads, refunds, currency conversion or instant-payout fees. Sales tax is collected and remitted by the marketplace, so it is never part of your payout, but eBay, Whatnot (processing), Depop and Etsy (processing) still charge a percentage on it. "Payout" is what the platform sends you; "profit" also subtracts your label and item cost. Each fee line is rounded to the cent.
