Not sure what shipping costs? Estimate shipping

Field help Sale price: the item price the buyer pays, before shipping and tax. Buyer shipping: Poshmark ignores this: the buyer pays Poshmark for the label. Sales tax: collected and remitted by the marketplace, but some platforms charge fees on it. Applied to item + shipping. Your shipping label cost (under More options): leave it blank to assume it equals the shipping you charged. Items sold per month (under More options): how many sales like this you make in a month, from 1 to 10,000. Above 1, you also get monthly and yearly totals. You paid for it: what the item cost you, so "you keep" is your real profit.

Calculating…

The two charge on different things. eBay takes 13.6% of the whole order (item, the shipping your buyer pays and sales tax) plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less) in most categories, clothing included (eBay Seller Center: Seller fees). Poshmark takes a flat $2.95 on sales under $15 and 20% of the sale price from $15 up, and the buyer pays Poshmark for the shipping label (Poshmark: Guide to Poshmark (fees)).

The short answer

  • Buyer pays $8 shipping: Poshmark leaves you more from $15.00 up to $29.02. From $29.03 up, eBay does. Under $15, Poshmark’s flat $2.95 is ahead from $9.41; below that, eBay is.
  • You offer free shipping on eBay ($8 label): the label comes out of your pocket on eBay but not on Poshmark, so Poshmark leaves you more until $155.98.
  • Both lines assume 7.5% sales tax and that you paid $10 for the item. Change any number in the calculator above to see your own break-even.

Why the result flips

Poshmark’s 20% is bigger than eBay’s 13.6%, but eBay charges its rate on shipping and sales tax too, and adds a per-order fee. On items from $15 to the high $20s those extras weigh more than the rate gap, so Poshmark comes out ahead. As the price rises, the 6.4-point rate gap grows faster than eBay’s extras, and eBay pulls ahead. Offering free shipping on eBay moves the break-even a long way up, because you pay for the label yourself.

Fees are only half the story: list where buyers shop for your item. If you’re unsure, the where to sell helper ranks all six marketplaces by money and fit. For the full rules, see the eBay fee calculator and the Poshmark fee calculator. Weighing a Poshmark offer? Try the offer & bundle calculator.

How the math works, what we assume, and where both fee rules come from.

How we calculate

We take your sale price, the shipping you charge and the buyer's sales tax, apply eBay's and Poshmark's published US fee rules (linked under Sources), then subtract your shipping label and what you paid for the item. Each fee is rounded to the cent. It is an estimate: your platform statement is the final word.

Sell the same kind of item often? Set Items sold per month under More options to see monthly and yearly totals. We work out one sale to the cent and multiply it, so the totals assume every sale pays the same fees (plus eBay's insertion fee past 250 free listings a month).

The break-even prices on this page come from running the same calculator at every price, one cent at a time, and finding where the result flips.

What we assume

US seller, US buyer, US dollars, one item per order, standard account in good standing, no promotions, ads, refunds, currency conversion or instant-payout fees. Sales tax is collected and remitted by the marketplace, so it is never part of your payout, but eBay, Whatnot (processing), Depop and Etsy (processing) still charge a percentage on it. "Payout" is what the platform sends you; "profit" also subtracts your label and item cost. Each fee line is rounded to the cent.
