eBay guideDoes an eBay Store pay for itself?

Fees checked ; next check US sellers · sources linked below

An eBay Store costs a monthly fee. In return you get lower final value fees in many categories and more free listings. Whether it pays for itself comes down to two numbers: how much you sell, and how many new listings you make.

What a Store costs

eBay charges the subscription every month. Yearly renewal costs less per month than monthly renewal (eBay Help: Store selling fees, checked ).

eBay Store subscriptions and free fixed-price listings
StoreMonthly renewalYearly renewal (per month)Free fixed-price listings a month, then
Starter$7.95$4.95250, then $0.30 each
Basic$27.95$21.951,000, then $0.25 each
Premium$74.95$59.9510,000, then $0.10 each
Anchor$349.95$299.9525,000, then $0.05 each
EnterpriseNot offered$2,999.95100,000, then $0.05 each
No Store$0.00$0.00250, then $0.35 each (eBay Help: Selling fees, checked )

The Basic and higher allowances are for all categories; eBay gives some of them extra free listings in select categories. Auction-style allowances are different. See eBay’s page for the details.

The fee saving (clothing example)

Without a Store, most clothing pays 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 (eBay Help, checked ). With a Basic, Premium, Anchor or Enterprise Store, most Clothing, Shoes & Accessories categories pay 12.7% up to $2,500 per item (eBay Help, checked ). A Starter Store pays the same final value fees as no Store; its benefit is listings. The per-order fee ($0.30 or $0.40) is the same either way.

That’s 0.9 percentage points off every clothing item that sells for up to $2,500 (above that, the Store rate drops to 2.35%). So from the lower final value fee alone, a Store covers itself once your monthly clothing sales (item + shipping + tax) reach:

Monthly sales needed for the lower fee alone to cover the Store (clothing, our arithmetic)
StoreYearly renewalMonthly renewal
Basic$2,438.89$3,105.56
Premium$6,661.11$8,327.78
Anchor$33,327.78$38,883.33

Other categories have different Store rates, and some are the same with or without a Store (Books & Magazines, for example, is 15.3% either way, on the first $2,500 with a Store and the first $7,500 without). Check your category on eBay’s page before you decide.

The listing saving

If you create more than 250 new fixed-price listings a month, each extra one costs $0.35 without a Store. A Basic Store includes 1,000. A Starter Store keeps 250 free and charges $0.30 after that, so on yearly renewal it pays for itself at about 99 listings a month past the 250 free ones (our arithmetic).

Putting it together

Say you list 400 new clothing items a month at a fixed price and your sales total $3,000.00 a month. Without a Store: $52.50 in insertion fees. With Basic on yearly renewal: $0 in insertion fees and $27.00 less in final value fees, for $21.95 a month. That leaves you about $57.55 a month ahead. (Our arithmetic from eBay’s published rates; your mix of categories and prices will differ.)

Rule of thumb: if you list well past 250 items a month, or your clothing sales are in the low thousands each month, a Basic Store is likely to pay for itself. If you list a handful of things a month, it won’t.

Before you sign up

  • A yearly renewal is a commitment. eBay links its Stores subscription terms, including what happens if you change or cancel, from its Store fees page.
  • Our eBay fee calculator uses the no-Store rates; it doesn’t model Store discounts yet.
  • Promoted Listings, optional upgrades and seller-performance surcharges apply with or without a Store.
